At least 47 people have been reported dead following a 6am gun attack on Sunday worshippers in Anambra, Southeastern Nigeria.

The attack on St. Philip's Catholic church in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Govetnmrnt Area followed a failed attempt to fish out a suspected drug baron by yet to be identified gunmen.

Sources in Anambra say the gunmen had trailed the suspect to the church after storming his house and learning he had gone to the church for mass.

According to the sources, the gunmen opened fire on worshippers in apparent anger when they searched but couldn't find him in the church.

As at the time of filing this report, those injured in the attack were being conveyed to the hospital while police made efforts to uncover the attackers.
