The University of Jos is set to confer three honorary degrees on some distinguished Nigerians for their respective contributions to nation building.

Among them is recently coronated Traditional Head of Butura Village, in Central Plateau's Bokkos LGA, HRH. Engr. John Mallo, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BEJAFTA Group Nigeria Limited, producers of BEJAFTA fertilizer.

Engr. Mallo is being awarded the Doctor of Engineering Degree, Honoris Causa (D.Engr.) for "his outstanding contribution to the development of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria, the development of education and for his philanthropic and community development efforts," Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sebastian Maimako said, Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference at the University's Senate Chamber, at the Varsity's Bauchi road campus, Prof. Maimako disclosed that the university's Governing Council has also approved the confernment of the Doctor of Laws Degree, Honoris Causa (LL.D) on the immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Police Service Commission, Sir Mike Mbama Okiro, CFR.

Mr. Okiro is being awarded for his "exemplary" conduct and leadership during a 'stellar' career in the Nigerian Police Force, VC Maimako said.

Similarly, the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Garba Danbatta is to be awarded the Doctor of Science Degree, Honoris Causa (D.Sc.) for his "technological acumen" and the "innovative and professional manner" the Nigerian Telecoms industry is bring transformed under his leadership, the institution's boss disclosed.

All three are expected to be conferred with their degrees along with over 7000 graduates of the university who have completed various programmes during the institution's 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic years.

The event which marks the 29th and 30th convocation ceremony of the university comes up this Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the university's Jeremiah Useni Mini Stadium, Naraguta Campus by 9am.

Events lined up ahead of the convocation ceremony according to the VC include Exhibition at the university's Bauchi road campus main Library tomorrow, Wednesday June 20, 2018 from 10am, as well as a football match between students and staff of the university at the JT Useni stadium on Thursday, June 21, 2018 by 3pm.

On Friday June 22, 2018, the eve of the Convocation, there will be a convocation lecture by His Lordship, Most Rev. (Dr.) Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto on the topic, "Broken truths: Nigeria's Elusive Quest for National Cohesion" at the university's multipurpose auditorium, Bauchi road campus by 2pm, preceding a convocation play entitled "April 1421" written by Prof. Tor Iorapuu at institution's the Open Air Theatre, Bauchi road campus which comes up by 5pm.
