The Saf Butura of Bokkos Local Government, Plateau State, Da Engineer John Gabriel Mallo Makwal, has been conferred with an honorary doctorate degree in Engineering, Honorus Causa (D.Engr.), by the University of Jos.

The village Chief was conferred with the award on Saturday at the Jeremiah Timbut  Useni Stadium located at the Unijos Naraguta Campus. 

Conferring the doctorate on him, the Vice-Chancellor of the university of Jos, Prof. Seddi Maimako said the honorary causa award waa in recognition of Engr. Mallo's contributions to humanity through his philanthropic gestures. 

The Saf Butura was accompanied to the 29th and 30th joint convocation ceremony by scores of prominent sons and daughters of Butura land amid cheers by students of the University of Jos from Butura land and Bokkos local government area. 

Two others were conferred with honorary degrees alongside the Saf Butura. They are the immediate past Chairperson of the Police Service Commission and former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro and the Executive Secretary of the National Communications Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta. 

An honorary degree, in Latin a degree honoris causa ("for the sake of the honor") or ad honorem ("to the honor"), is an academic degree for which a university (or other degree-awarding institution) has waived the usual requirements, such as matriculation, residence, a dissertation and the passing of comprehensive examinations. The degree is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master's degree, and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the academic institution or no previous post-secondary education. 

HRH Saf Butura a resourceful engineering professional with a wide range of experience in the Manufacturing and Oil & Gas industries was born on the 20th of January, 1970. He has a BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and is a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.


He started out as a Trainee Manager and rose to the peak of his career as the first Nigerian and black man to manage a multinational company - Tenaris Global Services. He is also the first black man and Nigerian to occupy the position of the General Manager at AOS Orwell Group.

 As an astute entrepreneur, he established Bejafta Group in 1998 and initiated activities actively in 2005 as the Managing Director. The company has grown to become a household name in the manufacturing services and the oil and gas sector.

Among his achievements is the development of all process control plan for the threading/ finishing line in TENARIS GLOBAL SERVICES NIGERIA(TGSN). Successful integration of a Warri facility after acquisition from former Hydril in 2007 /2008. Designing and fabricating a hydraulic pressure jaw required for the feed-in unit in FIRST ALUMINIUM ROLLING MILLS. This was locally done with available materials, thereby saving the cost of a new imported and expensive unit.

He has proven leadership skills and has attended various international training. He is a great motivator, a team player and is happily married.
