The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has appealed to Nigerian politicians to stop overheating the polity ahead of the 2019 elections.

The current political situation in the country particularly call for restraint on the part of the political leaders and their agents on both sides of the seeming conflict, the body said.

In a statement by its National Secretary, Shuaibu Liman, the journalists union said, "The rising political tension in the country was uncalled for.

The body in the statement said, "We charge politicians to focus more on the business of governance for which they were elected into office, instead of dissipating energy on unnecessary political rumblings.

"We believe that various untoward actions being exhibited by some politicians are in bad taste and are capable of causing harm to the electoral process.

"It is therefore pertinent to appeal for caution on the part of some of these political gladiators especially as we move toward 2019 elections."

The NUJ however warned against disregard for the rule of law, which it said appears to be fuelling so much ill feelings in the country.

"The restriction of arbitrary exercise of power is germane in a democracy," the statement said.
