Plateau State Gubernatorial candidate, Johnbull Shekarau says teachers in the state deserve the best welfare package.

According to him, the quality of education obtained in a state is determined by the performance of teachers.

Addressing journalists at the State PDP Secretariat after submitting his nomination form for the 2019 Governorship race, Shekarau lamented that the standard of education has drastically fallen in the state due to poor government attention.

"Plateau State used to be one of the best performing states in the country's educational rating.

"Right now we are 25th or so and that is because government has only paid lip service to the sector," he said.

To remedy the situation, Shekarau pledged to prioritize teachers salaries and general overhaul of the educational sector in the state.

"I will make sure that our teachers are well paid so that other people who are not teachers will be motivated to join the profession," he said.

Education that is compliant with modern technological trends in advanced countries of the world he said will be his priority.

He said, "We can't continue to offer traditional education to our children.

"Other countries of the world have gone far beyond the basic education we are teaching and we have to catch up.

"Other countries have gone far beyond the basic education we are offering here and are teaching artificial intelligence but we have to grow."

Shekarau who is the present House of Representative of Shendam/Mikang/Quanpaan Federal constituency in the Nigerian National Assembly equally vowed to evolve strategies to encourage children to go to school to make them useful to the society.
