Nigerian government on Wednesday mandated traditional institutions to play "critical roles" in community policing.

Community leaders, the government believes know their terrain and members more than any other for security roles.

Governor Simon Lalong of Plataau State who gave the charge at the installation of a First Class Chief of Ganawuri community, locally known as "Ata Aten", His Royal Highness, Yakubu Chaimang Your Royal Highness, maintained that traditional institutions, though "old-fashioned", function in "development and peaceful co-existence".

In carrying out the tasks however, Mr. Lalong insisted that the village Chiefs must uphold truth and advise on varied matters as "security officers" in their domains."
