The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the Plateau State gubernatorial debate fixed for January 2019 would enable citizens make informed decisions during the General elections.

INEC's Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Plateau State, Mr. Hussaini Pai on Frisay said it was important that electorates engaged candidates of political parties in a "responsible and productive way".

Receiving the Gubernatorial debate group in his office in Jos, the INEC official said most political campaign were "mere jamborees and occasions for mudslinging and hate speech."

As such, they miss addressing issues of governance, leaving the electorates largely uninformed, he said.

An official of the debate group, Mr. Solomon Chollom had told the INEC pointsman that the group was committed to deepening the country's electoral process.

The emergence of a credible governor in Plateau state was central to this quest, Mr. Chollom said.

Mr. Chollom who led the group on a courtesy call to the INEC office pledged a level playing ground for all candidates during the debates scheduled for 26th January, 2019.
