16yr old Maryam Mahmud
A 16 year old Nigerian schoolgirl has won a state recognition for ‘reconciling’ conflicting communities in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Miss Maryam Mahmud in September brought together different stakeholders in Jos North Local Government Area, one of the most socially segregated communities in the State to a peace dialogue.
Her aim according to her was to build peace and restore harmonious coexistence in the acclaimed ‘Home of Peace and Tourism’.

“Most of us were born in the era of conflict,” the just graduated student of Usama Arabic Secondary School, Yanshanu, Jos said.

Attracted by her ‘passion for peace,’ the Plateau State Peace Building Agency on Wednesday officially recognized her as ‘Peace Ambassador.’

Mr. Joseph Lengmang, the Director General of the Agency said the recognition was to encourage youth participation in peace building.

Aside an undisclosed reward to her, the PBBA boss announced an indefinite partnership with Miss Mahmud in its peace building programs.
