A Central Nigerian radio station, Jay 101.9 FM has been shutdown for allegedly threatening national security through its programming.

The station according to official sources was shutdown for airing inciting programmes during a post-election controversy in Jos the Plateau State capital.

Its news reports and analyses on the delayed National Assembly election results in Jos North Local Government Area, a decade-long flashpoint in the State reportedly necessitated the shutdown.

The directive to go off-air till further notice was received by management of the station on Friday evening from the National Broadcasting Commission, Jos.

Detectives from the Department of State Security had stormed the station yesterday, whisking away the Station's Head of Engineering, it was learnt.

Management of the station had just approached the DSS over the arrest when they were summoned to the Jos Zonal Office of the NBC.

The broadcast regulatory body had issued a warning last two weeks to the station over "partisan and inflammatory broadcast."

The station owned by an ex government official believed to be loyal to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party has however consistently warned its callers to desist from using foul language during live programmes.

The NBC however claims it has monitored reports that suggests the station stillbreached its codes in its programming.

Some progovernment pressure groups had called for the shutdown of the station days ago.

An unofficial news release by one of the groups specifically accused the station of inciting citizens against the ruling party.

The NBC letter directing the station's closure however does not specifically point to any inciting or partisan news report or programme.

When contacted, the Zonal Director of the body, Mr. Onoja Ogonwu said he was the wrong authority to comment on the matter.

He referred to an official in charge of Corporate Affairs who confirmed the shutdown through text, saying the body will issue a press statement on the development soon.

The station has however since gone off-air after passing an announcement to that effect at about 2030hrs local time.
