"THE HOME OF "PEACE" and "TOURISM" title of Plateau State has since become a redundant cliché, an outdated slogan only good for the plate numbers on our various auto-mobile vehicles.

From the visionary strides of late J.D Gomwalk through the Emancipation of Late Baba Solomon Lar to the democratic Era of Governor Joshua Dariye,Jonah Jang and now Governor Simon Bako Lalong, The state of Tourism has been on a worrisome decline.


A fundamental truth often overlooked or underappreciated in tourism development discussions is this: The ultimate tourism product is the place itself.


The character of the destination—its people, its natural and cultural assets, its aesthetic appeal—comprises the unique selling point on which inbound tourism depends.


What is the Plateau Identity? What is the Plateau Brand? What is the Plateau USP-unique Selling Point? What are the Plateau Colors?


Plateau that is naturally ordained by God to be the tourist destination of the world is a shadow of itself  as the tourism potentials that abound in the state has been left to whither away negligibly.


The Tourism Sector on the Plateau is not for Political appeasement ,it is a serious business that should be left in the hands of experts in that sector.

The Tourism Sector needs a holistic rebranding to stimulate the local economy for sustainable growth


Tourism boosts the economy, employs thousands of people, enriches our businesses and pays for important public services, such as education, Agriculture and law enforcement. Tourism works for each of us, every day. Tourism funds operating expenses and infrastructure in our local public systems.

Tourism is far more than just  "Jos" carnival ,beauty pageantry,musical shows,hotels, golf courses and restaurants. 

Tourism is serious business, Tourism should be the life saver of the Plateau Economy.

That it has been neglected by successive Governments is a mystery that needs to be unravelled on the Plateau.


The Advantages of Tourism


Economic. It brings in money. This is probably the main advantage of tourism and the reason why it has been promoted so much, especially in developing countries. The income generated can make up a significant proportion of both private, local, and national incomes.

.Opportunistic. It provides jobs. Hotels, bars, transport, activities, shops, and restaurants all need staffing. Tourism can provide much-needed employment for people.


Infrastructural. It provides a means and an incentive for investment in infrastructure such as roads, rail networks, and local medical and education facilities.


Environmental. It can provide economic incentives for a place to preserve, maintain, and regenerate the environment in both urban and rural settings.


Cross-Cultural. It promotes international connections which can bring more business and cultural collaborations in the long term. It also promotes cross-cultural awareness for both locals and tourist and builds bridges of understanding between cultures.


Promotional. It "puts a place on the map": Tourism gives the locality a chance to show itself off and raise its profile in the world.

PLATEAU NEEDS TO FOCUS ON CULTURAL TOURISM.


Plateau is blessed with over 52 ethnic Nationalities which should be harnessed as our strength and not weakness.

We have  rich cultural exhibitions Like NZEM BEROM,PUSDUNG,PUSKAT,NAWHAI cultural festivals that should be our defining moment and tourism roadmap to put Plateau on the world map as a cultural tourist destination.


"Cultural tourism is the subset of tourism concerned with a country or region's culture, specifically the lifestyle of the people in those geographical areas, the history of those people, their art, architecture, religion, and other elements that helped shape their way of life".


We have numerous historical sites, rock formations with folklores/folktales and mysteries around them,water fountains,good and inviting weather and variety of food that will attract intending tourist from across the globe.


Tourism seek ways to support locally-owned restaurants. This money will travel not only to the restaurant, tour operator or shopkeeper, but it infuses money into the local communities, sending ripples of economic support throughout the business’ entire local supply chain. 


When we invest in infrastructural development with good road networks with steady power supply, we will attract tourist that will bring the following benefits to our local economy.


1. Eat in a locally owned restaurant.


2. Take a walking tour using a local guide in each destination they visit


3. They Buy souvenirs made locally in our state  by our people


As with any other sector, tourism will march forward through visionary leadership and innovation, and in tune with client demand. Economic growth looks promising, with projections of 4.2% growth a year to 2024, largely fuelled by a millennial generation that travels more, travels longer, and values experiences rather than material goods.


"Studies point out that traveller demand for sustainable practices crosses the demographic landscape. In a 2012 TripAdvisor survey, for example, 71% of members said they planned on making more eco-friendly choices in the next 12 months. The millennial generation is more vocal about its demands for authenticity and impact and is enjoying the spotlight as brands and agencies race to gain loyalty. Closing the gap between status quo and potential for the world’s largest industry will rest on the shoulders of a new generation of leaders and innovators. The issue is how to identify who these visionaries are".


We have to get it right on the Plateau, we have to declare a state of emergency on the tourism sector.

We have to deploy technology in shaping a developmental blueprint for a Plateau TOURISM plan and roadmap.
